   I didn't comment on the cannabilism dream because it was a dream. I could be arrested several times a day for having some of the dreams I have, were it illegal to dream dodgy things. It isn't, yet, is it?

   I'm not so sure. It is not that the latent text is the unconscious text produced under the manifest text. If anything it is the other way around: the unconscious (through dreamwork) produces the manifest text, and it is the conscious mind (through analysis) that produces the latent text.

   But rather more interesting is that for Freud it is not so much that the unconscious produces a text; instead, it is what accounts for the various distortions and variations (through displacement, condensation, and so on) in the process of transforming latent text into manifest text–or perhaps vice versa.
