@travelingnomad1 she was resisting. he was arresting her for jaywalking, and she resisting. this wasn’t some innocent little girl that jaywalked and got punched in the face. she wanted some of what her friend was getting so she pushed the officer and therefore she got punched. if you don’t live in Seattle then shut the fuck up.
Bottom line, he was justified. Some people just don’t listen. When that girl decided to push the officer it became aggravated assault on a police officer. At that point he was going to apprehend a felon which justified the level of force. The people who don’t agree should pick up a book every once in while.

1. The officer entered the residence. He did not say whether he had permission or not, but he did indicate that at that time, he felt he was speaking with the legal resident.
2. Also note that while the officer was in the residence, Gates was apparently trying to call the officer's superiors.
3. The officer left the residence with Gates' Harvard Identification card still in hand.
Gates was lured outside, in my opinion, by an officer who wanted to show Gates how powerful he was.
I hope Gates does sue the officer and the department.
Without knowing all the facts, President Obama said the officer acted stupidly.
Knowing the facts as presented by the officer, I say the officer acted with malice. But that's just my opinion.
