Battle in Seattle – trailer, Seattle

November 1999, and five days are about to rock the world as tens of thousands of demonstrators take to the streets of Seattle in protest of the World Trade Organization’s Ministerial Meeting. Among them are Django (Andre Benjamin), Sam (Jennifer Carpenter), Lou (Michelle Rodriguez) and Jay (Martin Henderson). Each has a unique story, but they’re united in a common desire to be heard and to make a difference in the world. For these four protesters, this is very personal and the stakes are higher than mere politics. A peaceful demonstration to stop the WTO talks quickly escalates into a full-scale riot, and soon a State of Emergency is declared by the Mayor of Seattle. The streets are mayhem, and the WTO is paralyzed. Caught in the crossfire of civil liberties and keeping the peace are Seattle residents, including its beleaguered mayor (Ray Liotta), a riot cop on the streets (Woody Harrelson) and his pregnant wife (Charlize Theron). The choices they all make will change their lives forever. Writer/Director Stuart Townsend brings together this talented ensemble to intertwine different points of view – from protesters and police to delegates and doctors — each of whom intentionally or accidentally find themselves on the streets of Seattle in those last days of the millennium. Townsend seamlessly merges footage of the real event with his fictional narrative. Ultimately, Battle in Seattle illustrates that even against incredible odds, ordinary people can

This movie was revisionist and quite lame. The Black Bloc was nothing like they were portrayed in this movie. The director only consulted with the really well-funded “activists” like The Rainforest Action Network. The scene with the “anarchists” smashing a window while some pregnant mothers are still shopping inside is just completely inaccurate and it really shows a horrible bias and lack of judgement. “Breaking The Spell” and “Shut Em Down” are great videos to watch about this.

@MilitaryTacticalGear – sad for you, take a closer look and you’ll find the resistance is stronger than 1999, WTO. I was there and am here now. Study and go to the scenes of the crimes to properly investigate. The internet and electronic communications are extremely controlled, you know that, so go look elsewhere for real successful resistance.

@mcg942 “For multinationals, bribery enables companies to gain contracts (particularly for public works and military equipment) or concessions which they would not otherwise have won, or to do so on more favorable terms. Every year, Western businesses pay huge amounts of money in bribes to win friends, influence and contracts. These bribes are conservatively estimated to run to US$80 billion a year—roughly the amount that the UN believes is needed to eradicate global poverty.” — Dr Susan Hawley

@mcg942 I am not a liberal, nor did I call myself one! I am also not disillusioned like yourself. When you say “Then I grew up and went to college.” you are insinuating that I am not educated because you weren’t, which is a logical fallacy. If you are interested in global poverty then you should be aware that your seemingly large “200 million” is easily trumped by the 1 BILLION children alone currently living in desolate poverty and it is wealthy nations who benefit most from that poverty.

  19. mcg942 says:

In that time roughly 200 million people have been dragged out of desolate poverty. You call yourself a liberal, but you’re not helping anyone. I just got back from India where I met students who couldn’t believe self-righteous Americans actually think they are “helping” by taking away their freedom to conduct business.Trust me broski, I’ve been through that whole ultra-left reactionary luddite phase, I read all of Chomsky’s books and even campaigned for Nader. Then I grew up and went to college.

@mcg942 Those books are self help dealing with ancient shamanistic wisdom…A lot of people meditate or do Buddhist zen type relaxation, I don’t, but I also don’t see how that has any bearing on the book he wrote involving his experiences as an economic hitman.

  23. MrNeo2001 says:

@mcg942 Wow! Are you an internet troll?? Seriously… If you are actually serious I suggest you learn more about fractional reserve banking, international trade, currency exchange, military contracting, private industry, politics, arms dealing, CIA, etc… BOTH George W. Bush and Al Gore campaigned hard in 2000 with the promise of “prosperity through free and fair trade” and look where we are now 10 years later! Broke with financial ruin! Nothing is Free, period!

  24. mcg942 says:

@MrNeo2001 Here are two other books by John Perkins:

    • Psychonavigation: “first hand accounts of how diverse tribal cultures travel beyond time and space by means of visions and dream wanderings;”

    • Shapeshifting: “shamanistic techniques for global and personal transformation;”

  25. mcg942 says:

Did you actually read that book? Despite the fact that Perkins is a lunatic, his book is about loans from the World Bank, not “private entities”. No private financial institution wants to lend money to a undeveloped region. In fact, there is such a vacuum of private credit in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa that public institutions such as the World Bank have been created to fill such a void. Give poor people a chance and let them compete with the rest of us. Free trade is freedom.

I looked at the violent crime stats and there were three areas that stood out. Puerto Rico, D.C. and Alaska.

D.C. had the highest murder rate and an average forcible rape rate (murder rate 5 times national average).

Puerto Rico had three times the national murder rate but its forcible rape rate was 10% of the national rate.

Alaska has a slightly higher than average murder rate, but it has the highest rate of forcible rate, 2 1/2 times the national average.

Urban areas have the highest murder rates. Suburbs have the highest forcible rape rates.

Yes, I like data tables. Professional hazard.

I underestimated the genius of the superfriends’ supercommittee. It turns out that a committee created to reduce the deficit is instead going to increase it. As the Hill reported:
“Democrats on the supercommittee have proposed that the savings from the end of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan be used to pay for a new stimulus package, according to a summary of the $2.3 trillion plan obtained by the Hill.”
“The budget savings from ending the wars are estimated to total around $1 trillion over a decade, according to an estimate in July from the Congressional Budget Office.”little more than Obama’s 2009 stimulus bill
But, aside from that, in what sense are these “savings”? The Iraq War is ended — or, at any rate “ended” at least as far as U.S. participation in it is concerned. How then can congressional accountants claim to be able to measure “savings” in 2021 from a war that ended a decade earlier?
