Cutting Corners Part 4 – Air Crash Investigation/Mayday, Seattle

Alaska Airlines Flight 261 is heading for Seattle via San Francisco but its trimmable horizontal stabilizer jams due to a worn jackscrew assembly. The pilots try to resolve the situation but the stabilizer breaks free from its control system and the aircraft dives inverted into the Pacific Ocean, causing the death of all on board.

@nerv0582 They should call Alaska “Manson Air”.

  3. faffaflunkie says:

@Izakk96 Do you even know what a “jackscrew” is? I’m not saying that I would ever KNOWINGLY fly Alaska (though people inadvertently have flown Alaska when they purchased a ticket at Delta), but I hope there is a place in hell for whoever engineered that piece of cost cutting (use of a “jackscrew” to operate a critical component) into a commercial jetliner.

  4. Izakk96 says:

@faffaflunkie It’s not McDonnell Douglas’ fault. It’s not McDonnell’s, Douglas’, or Boeing’s. It’s Alaska Airlines’ fault for bad maintenance.

  5. faffaflunkie says:

    Great design, Doug.

  6. rmachayes says:

Thank God that the Federal government has come to their senses and now made it possible for whistleblowers to remain unknown. What happened here is a case of putting profit before human lives. This is criminal to say the least and yet I do not know of anyone at Alaska Airlines who served prison time for this atrocity.

Lack of grease on jackscrew costs 88 lives? 2:35

How much that required grease costs?

    Criminal negligence!

  9. NA734 says:

@hmsrenown Obviously! Drivers usually don’t have 7-8 or 400-500 people behind their backs of whom they’re responsible!

  10. hmsrenown says:

It’s not safer than automobile. Because pilots take flying a lot more seriously than drivers take driving.

  11. nerv0582 says:

What a messed up airline, even the logo look evil. -_-

  12. AndyMcArren1356 says:

Plane crash would be painful since the entire structure disintegrates upon impact if you crash nose-down and a very fast rate (like 400 knots or 320 G’s) But there are less air traffic so air travel is safer but difficult to control with if you are a pilot o_O

  13. Vikkoman says:

But talking about the differences between rail and commercial jet travel seems academic – both have relatively few deaths per unit, especially when compared to private automobiles. Rail might be safer in terms of measurements, but either way both air travel and rail are up there with each other.

  14. methanbreather says:

they even said it in the video series: whistleblowers don’t get jobs from the government. It is a shame. But the USA are run by corporations (remember all the money airlines got in the fall of 2001?).

  15. UnknownOconnor says:

But he helped the government to enforce aviation safety standards. Surely the FAA would have acknowledged him for this?? Can’t believe the government would just suddenly turn against him.

  16. methanbreather says:

no, the government screwed him over. He will never get a governmental job.

  17. methanbreather says:

not true. Train is the savest way of transportation. Both in rare passenger numbers and passenger*miles.
Flying is only save when you look that passengers*miles. If you look at passenger numbers only – it is even more dangerous than driving. Passenger*miles scews the numbers because planes fly long distances and most crap happens at start and landing.

  18. methanbreather says:

yes, everybody has the right to express an opinion. Like to voice an opinion about somebody’s else comment.
Like yours. First you want everybody to stop discussing and then you mention ‘right to express opinion’.
    Irony – look it up.

  19. UnknownOconnor says:

I really hope the US Government gave this person the support he needed. His career was destroyed by a small number of greedy people.

  20. Hobinator17 says:

i wish you can fly planes upside down in real life like you can in grand theft auto.

  21. methanbreather says:

whistleblowers are punished because profit is more important than lifes and the country is run by money and money alone.

Plutocracy – look it up folks.

  22. methanbreather says:

no, not corporate america. Money lent to you by China, Japan and european countries gave you the high standard of living. Undeserved.

  23. discobaby79 says:

I agree!! So you can keep you job, just keep you mouth shut and let possibly hundreds of people die!! Typical the governments yet again disgracing themselves!! A.holes!

  24. polarbear60 says:

Brecause then they will tell on the government. The system exists to protect the system. It’s messed up, I know.

  25. UnknownOconnor says:

There also has to be a balance between; on the one hand making money, and on the other saving lives.

I just saw a story this morning on the news about how more and more people are surviving plane crashes. They gave tips on what to do in the event of a crash. Get out within 90 seconds, position your body appropriately for the actual crash, stay below the smoke as you're trying to get out of the plane, etc. They're also using flame-retardant material and designing seats that will bend and lean forward in the event of a crash instead of coming loose and flying through the air.]]>
