Paradise is an aptly named region in Mount Rainier National Park. Also some messing around building dams, various timelapse and some pretty views of flowers and glaciers! :-) Monday 11th Aug 2009 Up early, picked up coffee in Packwood and headed for the south entrance. Decided to head out of the park to the West (every previous time ive been here Ive ended up going up North.. turned out to be a good call. Quite soon some very dramatic views of the volcano. Stopped at reflection lake, which dispite being ringed with trees would have been a good place to fly. I didnt on the account that firstly the mountains head was in the clouds and secondly there was an annoying (if small) amount of wind. Even more annoying as the plaque said the lake was usually mirror still at dawn. Set a timelapse up as it looked like the morning clouds would burn off. They didnt! But while I was figuring that out I amuzed myself building a little damn on the outflow of a stream flowing into the lake. The onto Paradise, and its namesake is pretty close to the mark. Called home, and had an edifying chat about volcanos with a ranger. Turns out I was wrong about the gas content of the cascades, its 95 % water! (I thought it was mostly CO2). Wandered around the paths in the back of Paradise for a couple of hours. Many places to fly, by both wind and clouds were building (even with all the people) gonna have to come back this way sometime. Eventually found myself wandering on some sidetrack down to a

that’s because not too many people understand that there hs been almost a 1/4 mi retreat of most glaciers, and that is being conservative in myu statement.

  7. GeologyofOhio says:

I don’t understand why this comment has been thumbed down, considering how the statement is fairly accurate. The glaciers retreated about one quarter their size between the little ice age (around 1850) through 1950.

But it’s still a sight to behold, nonetheless.

“because you don’t worship the deity that THEY BELIEVE created it.”

Fixed. I agree with your general sentiment, though. :)

You look up, you see beauty.
You look down, you see more beauty.
You come back up to eye level and you see a bunch of ignorant fuckers trying to convince you, that you can’t appreciate this kind of beauty as much as they do, because you don’t worship the deity that created it.

should have gone to the olympics. although i have seen some pretty cool shit in the cascades, i just prefer the olympics. washington is an amazing state, travel east of the cascades and its just a barren wasteland, the complete opposite of the coastal area.

  11. mortrek says:

Also want to mention that there are lots of amazing glacier caves in Washington (assuming they haven’t melted), some of which are a pretty easy hike. They are amazing.

i was there today, the only bad thing is it was “free admitance day” in the park so all the riff raff was destroying our mountain didnt even want to get out of the car.

I hope global warming don’t make these glaciers disappear.. I haven’t made my round there.

I don’t know your route home, but I’d recommend checking out Grand Coulee on your way through Central Washington. Dry Falls is an impressive vista, perfect for your airplane.

Awesome scenery. ls1z28chris: As someone who was lucky enough to be able to take a couple extended cross country trips like this, there seemed to be more Europeans than Americans there were at all the most scenic western parks. Maybe we need longer paid vacations…

No kidding. I’ve lived in America all of my life, and I’ve never taken the time to visit the places thunderf00t is sharing in these videos. This is some great stuff.
