Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist, Seattle

In this Howard Hughes Medical Institute program, Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, host of the PBS program NOVA scienceNOW and director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, sits down with Dr. Thomas Cech, president of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, to discuss his own illuminating experiences as a graduate student, and how he became interested in science. Tyson also discusses his outreach success in making science accessible to the general public.

I loved what he said about the black community not being able to afford him NOT doing astrophysics. It’s that kind of exposure that really helps people forget about racism

@DeviousBetrayer Hey, thanks for the insults random guy. My comment was a compliment. Neil really has a way with words and knows how to make things understandable.

@edheldude You sound like a pretentious pompous pussy.

It takes a true genius to simplify complex subject matter.

angela1894: you write as if you have actually accomplished something with your life, what’s your PhD in

  17. yendorification says:

@angela1894: Randall pinkett is ranked among the 10 most educated ppl in America, Ben Carson is ranked the worlds most successful pediatric neurosurgeon

  18. angela1894 says:

@OnefourthAsianguy You obviously have not attended a graduate program. He was admitted to a PhD program but flunked out with a Masters. Most people are able to get a masters degree (that is conferred after taking a qualifying exam) even if they eventually flunk out of the PhD program..

  19. angela1894 says:

@yendorification Most people get PhD at 27. You graduate college at 22 and it should take you 5 or less years to get your PhD. Most graduate programs will kick you out if you spend too much longer than 5 years.

Can you cite the ranking used to conclude Tyson was one of America’s top 50 astrophysicists ? The ranking is most likely based on his POPULARITY in the media, rather than his actual publications and scientific accomplishments within the field of Astrophysics.

  20. angela1894 says:

@yendorification Nobody knows more about smart black people than I do. But all the people you mentioned are not highly accomplished in their fields. What exactly did Randall Pinkett do other than get degrees from Rutgers and MIT ?

And please do more research on Emeagwali and why he was able to win the Gordon Bell Prize because of a lucky situation.

All the people you quoted are brilliant and above average, but they are not leaders within their fields. You’re misinformed if you think so..

Not all ‘uncoloured’ folks are great astrophysicists either-I don’t want to point any fingers. Astrophysics is a tough profession to begin with. As long as he has earned his due to wear a suit and tie in his profession then he’s doing ‘okay’ as an astrophysicist.

I didn't know Seattle's Best Coffee before living in Portland, in France we only know Starbucks. But I made a distinction between the two brands relatively fast, and for me, Seattle's Best is, as said before, less elitist, and has this image of “good quality”.

I was really surprised when I knew the logo will change, and when I discovered it, I immediatly thought the link with Starbucks; this is really close to their creative charte… Sad ! The old logo illustrated the authenticity and the quality. Now, with that change, and the sell of Seattle's Best in Subway and Walmart, I agree with you, I think Seattle's Best's image will be affected in a bad way.

And if the goal of Starbucks' president was effectively to use Seattle's Best as their cheaper coffee, that means reducing costs and I'm afraid the quality will be affected. Added to the potential negative image caused by walmart partnership, it may be hard for Seattle to keep its “high quality” position.

Me admitting NASA uses Carrington heliographic will NOT prove a thing, that's a big non-sequitur. It's up to you to prove the flare of Nov69' made Apollo impossible, but every time I ask you for any “numbers” that you espouse, you run & hide.
Like I've said, I've never actually heard you explain about radiation using anything that remotely uses numbers that a practicing health physicist would use.
Any attempt to debate it with you results in you running away or evading the question..
